Tetris is the puzzle game that roared.
The game was designed by a Soviet math researcher, Alexi Pajitnov, and programmed by a student of computer informatics at the University of Moscow.
Tetris was originally programmed on an IBM-PC, but soon it was available on every hardware format in the world, from arcade cabines and home consoles to CD-ROM players and Game Boys.
It was the first computer program to be imported and made commercially available in the U.S. from the then Soviet Union. This "glasnost in a computer" spawned five sequels, numerous industry and consumer awards, and remarkable popularity that continues today.
