Mortal Kombat

The next violent fighting game.

Mortal Kombat had, of course, an enormous amount of strikes, kicks, jumps and combination moves. But it also had added "Fatality Moves", which allowed the player to kick the opponent while he was down. Not long after its release, dedicated players begin to find out these lethal moves with which winning fighters literally kill their opponents with graphical "Finishing Moves"; these include decapitation, incineration and-in Kano's case - tearing an opponent's still-beating heart from his or her chest.

Nintendo's strict policies regarding game content have forced the blood and most of the fatalities to be removed from the SNES and Game Boy cartridges; the Sega-licensed versions allow the original blood and finishing moves only if the player enters a specific code before the game starts.
